Seunghoon Baek

Statement

Seunghoon Baek (b. 1990, South Korea) is a media and performance artist based in Berlin and South Korea. He materializes light. To materialize light is to materialize perception. Light makes everything visible, yet remains itself unseen. Through performances and installations of artificial light and darkness, he turns light, always a means of seeing something else, into the very object of seeing.

The world we see is a virtual construct woven by perception. Light reaching the eye becomes information, and information is woven into a single world. Light is the site where that virtuality first takes shape. In his work, light is passed on, covered, and leaves marks on matter. Where light falls, things darken, while shadows grow bright. The moment light can be grasped, we come to see the act of seeing itself.

Today the world reaches us as light, through screens and optical fibres. In an age when everything is compressed into a single flash, he unfolds that flash back into matter one can touch. There, light and darkness presuppose each other, and the one who sees and what is seen fold into one. He studied Fine Arts with Monica Bonvicini at the Universität der Künste Berlin, and his work has been shown at the European Media Art Festival (EMAF) and in Germany, South Korea, Iceland and Cuba.
