Seunghoon Baek

Bio

Seunghoon Baek (b. 1990, South Korea) is a media-performance artist based in Berlin.

He creates performances and installations through artificial light and darkness. Light makes everything visible, yet remains itself unseen. He takes light, which has always been a medium for seeing something else, and turns it back into an object of observation.

The artist regards the world we see as a virtual construct woven by perception. Light that reaches the eye becomes information, and that information is woven into a single world. Light, then, is the very site where this virtuality takes shape.

In his work, light is passed on, covered, and leaves traces on matter. Where light falls, surfaces darken, while shadows grow bright. The moment light becomes something one can touch, the act of seeing itself comes into view. To materialize light is to materialize perception.

He understands light as a compression of information. Today the world reaches us as light, through screens and optical fibres, and we live gazing at that light almost without pause. In an age when everything arrives compressed into a single flash, how can perception reveal itself as matter? Where light and darkness presuppose each other, the one who sees and what is seen fold into one.
