The Person Who Cannot See Themselves, Short story, A5 book with 88 pages, transparent text stickers on the wall, mirror, 2023.
St. Bartholomew Church, Halle, Germany
“The Person Who Cannot See Themselves” is a short story about light and perception. A figure tries to recognize her invisible body through breath, shadow, and footprints, but comes to realize that all of these are merely shifting appearances.
After a certain event, she swallows the sun and becomes a space of light herself, in which things, time, and events continuously transform and expand. In the end, she realizes that she never possessed a physical body.
Key sentences from the book appear as glossy, transparent text on the walls. In the reflected light, viewers read them by touch, moving through the space like the protagonist, in search of their own body.
Standing before the mirror set at a 90-degree angle, one’s own reflection disappears. The mirror no longer shows a body, only a space that continues into infinity.
“I tried to hold the flickering water with my hand, but my reflection in it only grew more distorted.”
